6th Class Local History Tour

26th Sep 2022

6th Class were blessed with the weather on Friday the 23rd. With glorious sunshine the three sixth classes set off on a walking tour of the local area in Portmarnock. The children were delighted to get out of the classroom and it gave them ample opportunity to learn about historic landmarks in their local area. We set off on a course with a number of stops including:

  1. The Old Tin Church at Lidl
  2. View of the Old Mill and the Ducks
  3. The Old Golf Club
  4. Coastal Watch Éire sign recreation on the beach
  5. View of Irelands Eye and Historic Stories of Howth
  6. The Southern Cross Monument
  7. The Martello Tower
  8. High Rock and a View of Paddys Hill
  9. The Jameson House ( Country Club)
  10. The Old Grave Yard

The children got the opportunity to learn about local landmarks. As well as that, previous to the tour, the classes discussed the coastal watch project (Éire Signs on the coast of Ireland). During our tour on Velvet strand in Portmarnock, we made an attempt to recreate an Éire sign with the number 83 in our locality. The class drew it out on the sand and then organized themselves into position to recreate this sign from an aerial view. It was a success and well done to everybody involved. It was a great trip out with the three classes and we look forward to many more.

Thank you from all in sixth
