Marnock's Music Group make the final!

15th Apr 2026

Today at 12 noon, it was announced on RTE Lyric FM that Marnock’s Music Group were chosen as one of six primary schools that will compete in the final of the Waltons RTE Lyric FM Music for Schools Competition in the National Concert Hall on Monday 18th May 2026!

Classes took time out from their work to listen into Niall Carroll on his Classical Daytime show on Lyric FM at noon. Niall, a master of suspense said that he would announce the six schools after ad break and then proceeded to play another piece of music after the break! The suspense was painful! Finally, he announced the schools as follows:

Bunscoil Loreto, Gorey, Co. Wexford
Danescastle National School, Carrig on Bannow, Co. Wexford
Newcastle National School, Athenry, Co. Galway
St. Brigid's National School, Tooreen, Co. Mayo
St. Marnock's National School, Portmarnock, Co. Dublin
St. Teresa’s National School, Killoe, Co. Longford

There were great scenes of jubilation around the school after the announcement with teachers and students congratulating each other. The group, Mr. Maughan and Ms. Kenealy gathered in the office with the board chairperson, Ciarán McCormack and Ms. Trimble congratulated the group on the intercom.

The 37 members of the Marnock’s Music Group, Ms. Kenealy, Mr. Maughan and Ms Murphy will travel to the National Concert Hall on Monday 18th May to compete against these schools in the final. The judges on the day will be Aideen Walton (Walton’s Music), Aedín Gormley (lyric FM) and Paul Noonan (singer from Bell X1). The winners will receive a €2,000 voucher for Waltons Music shop, second place will receive a €1,000 voucher and third place will receive a €500 voucher.

The Music Group have been taking a break from practising since the video was recorded on the 4th of March but it is now time to revisit the entry piece to prepare it for the final. We think that the piece is amazing and we wish them every luck on the day!
