5th class investigate friction for Science week

9th Nov 2021

Today we investigated the effect of friction on rolling objects like marbles and toy cars.

Each group set up three ramps of the same height with different surfaces: 1. plain board  2. covered in felt  3. covered in crepe.

We rolled marbles/cars down each ramp and measured how far they travelled in cm.

The results were interesting and may have been affected by other factors such as dust/dirt on the floor or people accidentally getting in the way!

Some groups thought of clever ways to measure the distance travelled like measuring the length of one Sharpie and putting lots of them end to end for the distance rolled.

It was an interesting if sometimes chaotic experiment in 5th class!
